Bingham looks to Nottingham, not to King’s Mill
Our Newark clients go to King’s Mill in Sutton-in-Ashfield. Bingham goes west. Most serious admissions here land at Queen’s Medical Centre or Nottingham City Hospital, both run by Nottingham University Hospitals. Grantham and District and Newark Hospital pick up some outpatient appointments. A Bingham family can deal with three trusts in one year.
A QMC discharge means a different community team from a King’s Mill one. Call before discharge day if you can.
What the Vale asks us for
In villages where the nearest shop or surgery is a drive away, a familiar face counts for a lot. We aim to give each client a core team of up to four carers.
- Companionship care: company for someone living alone in a village.
- Personal care: washing, dressing, toileting and continence care.
- Dementia care at home: consistent carers and familiar routines.
- Respite care: planned breaks for a spouse or family carer who needs rest.
- Hospital discharge care: support after a stay at QMC or Nottingham City.
- Overnight care: sleeping nights or waking nights.
- Live-in care: a carer living in the home, as an alternative to a care home.

Which council does what in Bingham
Two councils share the work in Bingham.
Nottinghamshire County Council handles adult social care. It carries out the care and support assessment, decides eligibility, and sets what you contribute. Call 0300 500 80 80. Anyone who appears to need care and support can ask, without a diagnosis or a referral first.
Rushcliffe Borough Council handles adaptations to the home. Ramps, handrails, wider doors, stair lifts, level access showers, better access to the garden, and in some cases an extension for a downstairs bedroom or bathroom. The mandatory Disabled Facilities Grant is capped at £30,000 and is means-tested on household income and savings. A disabled child under 18 is assessed without the family’s income counting.
The two are joined at the start. You apply through Nottinghamshire County Council, whose occupational therapist assesses what is needed. Rushcliffe then administers the grant and the work. The applicant is expected to intend to stay in the property for five years after the works finish.
What home care costs in Bingham
Visiting care starts at £31 an hour. A 30 minute visit is £17. Travel is a flat £2.50 per visit, the same for a village address as a town one. Bank holidays and Christmas Day are charged at a premium rate, confirmed when we quote.
Care is VAT exempt. Families pay privately or use a Direct Payment. NHS Continuing Healthcare covers the whole cost where health needs qualify. Local authority funding has the detail.

Bottesford is in Leicestershire, so Direct Payments there are administered by Leicestershire County Council. Its front door for information and advice is First Contact Plus on 0116 305 0004. Leicestershire’s own guidance says there is a waiting list, with priority going to the people who need help most. Some families arrange care privately while they wait.
